Did you know that leap years happen so that we can align our calendar with the Earth's orbit? I just learned that, not because I wanted to know why it exists but who came up with the name, of course. Leap day. What a silly little name… very camp.
I love leap day because I feel like I’ve got a bonus day, kind of frozen in time like that 2002 nickelodeon movie where the kid from Bring It On gets a secret watch and does a bunch of cool stuff with his friends while everyone else is frozen.
With my bonus day, I’m going to have a “yes afternoon,” do whatever I feel like doing, and shake up the mold of a typical Thursday.
Here are some recommendations, things I really loved this month, things to read, watch, buy, things to shake up your routine on this leap day.
Unsure if I just needed a good cry or what but Past Lives moved me in a way I cannot fully grasp.
It is the most perfect depiction of yearning, of losing yourself and finding yourself, I’ve seen on screen in a long time. — Some wise soul on reddit.
I would add that it is just the right combo of the melancholy, bittersweet longing that nostalgia brings. Here is a picture of me half way through it, in absolute emo bliss.
I’ve been really into cozy and hearty recipes this month. My favorite is this Pastina dish inspired by Dan Pelosi’s homemade vodka sawce. It’s basically just little baby pastas with chicken and broccoli and a whole jar of… sawce. Super easy, esp if you swap homemade for Rao's. 🤷♀️
Then you grate fresh parmesan (I like to mix it up between sides of the grater so you get some variation in your cheese size).
And top it off with garlic bread or texas toast.
Imaginara— Gifted my nephew this AI generated book that features our family and all of his favorite activities and things. He’s obsessed with it and it’s the cutest thing ever, highly recommend for the little (or big) babies in your life.
Speaking of AI, I found this YouTube video unpacking Generative AI in a nutshell to be really cool and informative. I enjoyed the whole 18 mins (on 1.5x speed) but if you only have time for 30 seconds, I recommend 7:47 for a useful tip on how to have conversations and get feedback from ChatGPT that I’ve been trying and loving.
Loved this NYT article on menu trends. Menus can be such an interesting branding challenge because, unless you’re at a diner, it’s mostly words. So cool to see all of the unique ways you can play with copy, font, and color.
Zines are back and booming. Stumbled into Mother Tongue and am super obsessed with everything about it. Can’t wait for the next edition.
Lastly, I did a little personal rebrand on my website with dear friend and icon Sarah Kleist this month and had the best time. Check out the new site: carly.fun 🎉
Love your site!
