It's all there in Mary Poppins to be fair. Mr Banks is saved when he walks away from the repetitive tasks of the bank having finally been won over by the humanity of Bert & Poppins. Essential AI-onset-fear-alleviant viewing. The future belongs to those who invest in kites.
yay! enjoyed this. it's true; the struggle is in forcing ourselves to go connect with humans instead of being lazy. studies have shown octogenarians thrive bc they are SOCIAL beings. i love AI for mundane to existential questions, but i def don't see it replacing ideas and taste
I've seen Seth Godin call them "real skills" too. Imo, I really like the term soft skills. Soft doesn't have to mean less than. Soft can mean tender or slow. I like the idea behind Adam and Seth's thesis around it, but I think soft can be even stronger if we can redefine our perception of the word.
Brilliant, Carly! I love that you proposed human connection as "a practice" in that last paragraph. I feel rusty after a few days of working from home!
Also, congrats on saving like $100 by posting today!
Wow, this was a really, really wonderful essay, that touched on so many of my feelings, both positive and negative, but mostly ambivalent about the future. I really appreciated being reminded about the importance of my soft skills.
So much here, Carly bravo brava!! Even before I finished reading this sentence jumped out at me -> "One day we’ll look back at this time too, and be homesick for the moment just before AI completely changed our society and way of living and working and being." YOU NAIL IT!
what a great question... yes, I will think on that! off the cuff, I'm wondering if my nostalgia, at age 73, is even greater because I remember back to rotary telephones, no answering machines, writing letters on stationary, etc. etc. The Internet was unimagined; AI was outer space science fiction...

Honestly so true.

In Adam Grant’s latest book Hidden Potential he says theres nothing soft about these skills and they should be called “character skills” instead

Thank you Beth. Agree, I work from home too and always feel like I need to me extra conscious of it. And tysm lol big relief.
losing $15 is a small price to pay to see this out in the world! love the finished draft!!
THANK YOU for your help in making this way more thoughtful
Reading this made me want to write
Ok best compliment ever.
As a life long champion of soft skills, hallelujah 👻
Hahah truly. If 7th grade me could only read this!
"The future belongs to those who are brave enough to reach out." Yes, ma'am!! (waves wildly from the front row) Words literally to thrive by.
Found you via the ridiculously terrific Seth Werkeiser; subscribed and excited to be in your orbit.
omg hiii! waves wildly from the front row is the best visual I could imagine 🥹 (waves wildly back). Seth is the best of the best what a joy.
👋🏻👋🏻 ! A joy indeed.
Looooved seeing this come to life!!! 🌱 💞
YES thank you so much for noodling with me in the early stages of this
Great article. With all the AI everything right now, you really brought it back to something real and important... how we show up for each other.
I’d have to agree - thanks for the mention Carly!

Debbie! I'd be so interested to read the [B]OLD AGE take on this kind of nostalgia

ahh why did I just see this. your nostalgia is absolutely greater. I think I would've loved only communicating via letters.
